Syracuse
Syracuse is an important centre in central New York with over 700,000 people in the metropolitan area and around 150,000 within the city limits. This city grew rich in the early 19th century from salt and after the Civil War it became a major manufacturing centre. Although an important city, it doesn't have any worthwhile tourist destinations. However it has a hostel and it's a pleasant enough place to break the journey if you're driving through central New York.
