Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine, on Locust Point 5km southeast of downtown Baltimore, is one of the city's most visited attractions. The fort played a major role defending Baltimore from the British in the American War of 1812. On 14 September 1812 on the dawn after the battle, the American flag flying above Fort McHenry inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star-Spangled Banner, which would later become the United States' national anthem.
