Baltimore is a gritty working-class city that is undergoing a renassaisance with newly gentrified historic neighbourhoods such as the Inner Harbor.
It is close enough to Washington DC to visit on a day trip, although the reopening of Baltimore's HI hostel means that you now have the opportunity to stay a little longer.
