African American Museum & Library at Oakland

This museum in Oakland’s city centre has exhibits about African-American history and culture.

Chabot Space & Science Center

This science museum has a strong focus on space and includes a 230-seat planetarium and the largest public telescope in the United States. Unfortunately its location in Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland Hills is not accessible by public transport.

Jack London Square

The hub of Oakland’s revitalised waterfront is home to many bars and restaurants plus an Amtrak train station and a ferry terminal with ferries to Alameda and San Francisco. The square also contains a replica of author Jack London’s Klondike hut. The square is also home to Jack London Market (55 Harrison Street, Oakland; tel (510) 645 9292), a multi-storey daily farmers’ market.

Oakland Museum of California

This large museum features permanent collections relating to Californian culture, history and ecology including exhibits on the state’s native people and diverse ecosystems as well as a collection of around 600 artworks. Following an extensive renovation, the museum will be re-opening to the public on 1 May, 2010.

USS Potomac

The USS Potomac is a former Coast Guard cutter that served as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidential yacht from 1936 to 1945. It is moored next to Jack London Square.
