Oakland International Airport (OAK; tel (510) 577 4000) is 17km (10½ miles) south of Oakland’s city centre. It is a popular alternative to San Francisco International Airport that handles flights by low-cost airlines such as Southwest.
Oakland Airport is not directly connected to the BART network and travellers need to transfer between BART trains and the AirBART shuttle bus (which runs every 10 minutes) at Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station. Transport into Oakland’s city centre by BART costs $4.75 ($1.75 for the BART train fare plus $3 for the AirBART bus). AC Transit bus routes 50 and 805 provide a cheaper alternative to the AirBART bus, connecting the airport with Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station for $2, which reduces the cost of a one-way trip into central Oakland to $3.75.
Greyhound coaches stop at the terminal on San Pablo Avenue near 20th Street in downtown Oakland.
AC Transit (tel (510) 891 4700) buses run across the bay to San Francisco. The one-way fare is $4.
The Alameda/Oakland Ferry (tel (510) 749 5972) operates ferry services to Alameda and San Francisco from its terminus at Jack London Square. The one-way fare to San Francisco is $6.25.
Oakland is the western terminus of the transcontinental railroad and Amtrak trains stop at Jack London Square station and also at nearby Emeryville. Amtrak trains don’t go to San Francisco.
